Fasti Magistrales, Annales or Historici, were concerned with the several festivals, and everything relating to religious practice and the gods, and the magistrates; to the emperors, their birthdays, offices, days consecrated to them, with feasts and ceremonies established in their honor or for their prosperity. The Fasti is a Latin poem in six books, written by Ovid and believed to have been published in 8 AD. The Fasti is organized according to the Roman calendar and explains the origins of Roman holidays and associated customs, often through the mouths of deities and with multiple aetiologies. The Fasti is one of Ovid's most complex, inventive, and remarkable works. In presenting the Roman calendar in poetic form, it encompasses an unusually wide range of subjects, a labyrinth of religious rites, historical events, and astronomical myths that can place significant demands on the reader.

5 Ovid’s known corpus of work includes the Amores, Heroides, Medea (a lost tragedy), Ars Amatoria, Metamorphoses, Fasti, Tristia and Ex Ponto. 6 In the Tristia (2.552) Ovid states that his fate has interrupted his work on the Fasti. Ovid’s mention of an interruption is likely a reference to his banishment from Rome to Tomis on the Black Sea Immediately download the Fasti summary, chapter-by-chapter analysis, book notes, essays, quotes, character descriptions, lesson plans, and more - everything you need for studying or teaching Fasti.
